Das Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Köln zeigt in der Sonderausstellung Ex Machina Roboter aus verschiedenen Jahrzehnten. Die ältesten Ausstellungsstücke sind Elsie und Elmar, zwei "Schildkröten", die eine Lichtquelle orten und verfolgen können. Der Entwickler Grey Walter begann bereits 1949 mit der Arbeit an diesen Maschinen. Ihr Prinzip der Lichtverfolgung dient auch heute noch als Beispiel für die Verarbeitung von Sensordaten bei der Robotersteuerung und findet sich etwa in den Modellen von Fischertechnik wieder.
