Das schrieb mir Siegfried Gonzi: »Yorick ist ein sehr guter Ersatz für IDL. Ich habe es installiert und es läuft wirklich sehr schnell und ist schneller als Matlab und RLab und SciLab. Yorick lief früher nicht auf MacOS 8.0. Das hätte Anfang dieses Jahres abgeändert werden sollen. Jedoch vergaßen die Entwickler, auch die neue Version zum herunterladen bereitzustellen. Erst als ich mich erkundigte, warum Yorick beim Starten dauernd abstürzt, kamen sie auf den unglücklichen Fehler, nicht die neueste Version bereitgestellt zu haben. Die Version für den Mac läuft nun mit 8.6 sehr, sehr stabil (ich hatte noch nie einen Absturz).«

Und noch ein paar Zeilen, die die Entwickler von Yorick an Siegfried Gonzi schrieben: »Thanks for the test results. Our own tests show that yorick and IDL are roughly the same speed. The problem for many people (even in the US) ist that an IDL licence can cost more than a new PC or Mac. There are a number of astronomerws and astrophysicists that use yorick and some of them havecontributed packages. I have not included all of the contributed 'dot.i' files in the Mac distribution, so you might want to look in the Unix branch of the yorick ftp site. It would probably also be a good idea to look at any other links on the yorick home page.«

Yorick gibt es für PowerPPC Macs ebenso native wie für 68k-Maschinen mit und ohne FPU.

Yorick sollte bitte nicht mit dem gleichnamigen Forth-Ableger verwechselt werden, den es vor einigen Jahren für den Mac einmal gab.

Die Yorick-Homepage hatte Ingo Keck entdeckt, sie lag etwas versteckt.
